The pool pump and filter compose the main brunt of your pools hardware and are also one of the most important items you will be buying for your pool. Should either one of them break down then your pool will be out of service. If they aren't quickly repaired or replaced then your pool will in very short order turn into a green scummy mess.
Your pool pumps primary job is to power the pools cleaning systems such as the filter and the automatic pool cleaner if you are using a suction side or pressure side pool cleaner. The pool filter is of course also there to keep the water clean.
However; the pool filter will only clean a certain amount of the debris from your pools water. The job if cleaning the very finite debris from your pools water is given to an automatic pool cleaner, which is designed to remove very fine particulate matter from your pool.
So what is it that will determine the size of your pump and filter for your pool? The answer to that question, is that it is the size of the pool itself that will be the determinate factor. You don't want either one to be too large or too small for the size of the pool that they are connected to.
To large a pump and your electrical bills will skyrocket. Too small a pump and your filtration system won't function properly. Also, a smaller pump on a larger pool means the filter will tend to break down or burn out much sooner.
Besides, connecting a pump and filter to your pool that is too large for the amount of water that your pool contains simply won't make any difference in the cleanliness or operation of your pool. If you are installing an above ground pool, a complete pool kit that includes everything is one way to insure that your pump and filter are a perfect match.
