The Knowledge Explosion
Living on the banks of the Euphrates river in the times of the Babylonian empire, when man laboured from dawn to dusk to eke a living and the camel was the fastest form of transport, the ancient prophet Daniel was inspired by God to describe an end time – an age when "many will travel to and fro, and knowledge will increase" (Daniel 12:4).
We live in that scientific age, a time when knowledge has exploded and communication technology has shrunk world to a global village.
One scientific discipline where knowledge has exploded is astronomy. As is well known, in the times of Galileo, Christian bishops were convinced that the earth was the centre of the universe and that the sun revolved around it. However, their belief was based on a serious misunderstanding of several simple Bible verses. But so convinced were they of their error, these religious men, who claimed to live by creed of "love your neighbour as yourself", that they were prepared to put to death a man who disagreed with them.
Scientific Disrepute Again
According to the records, so certain were they of their beliefs that they even refused to look through Galileo's telescope and see for themselves the phases of various planets that could only be explained by their rotation around the sun. As a result, Christianity and the Bible were brought into scientific disrepute.
Sadly, as they battle against the modern atheistic forces of evolution, "creationists" today repeat a similar error by clinging to a few scriptures that they have failed to understand and reject the clear facts of science as a result. Oddly, it seems that although evolutionists and creationists understand each other's errors, they fail to understand their own. This situation is, of course, very convenient for evolutionists as, instead of being forced to justify the unwarranted assumptions, errors and half-truths that are glossed over with vague verbosity, they simply discredit their opponents for their scientific simplicity.
The Watchmen
As Solomon explained in the "Song of Songs" and as psychologist now understand, many people are in effect sleepwalking through life, seeking the quiet life, confident they have the Truth, and unwilling to consider that fact that some of the cherished beliefs imparted to them as the grew up might just be wrong. And as Solomon's metaphor of the Watchmen shows, they will often get very angry and hostile to anybody who tries to disturb their state of blissful ignorance (See the "Principles of Excellence" at http://www.creationfoundation.co.uk).
The Gap Theory
Geology is another scientific discipline where knowledge has exploded. Early Victorian geologists, devout Christian men such as Thomas Chalmers and William Buckland, had always assumed that all or most of the earth's rock strata must have been formed by Noah's Flood. That was a nice, comfortable part of their Christian faith, something people had believed for several thousand years. They also assumed, based on the chronological studies of various theologians, that the earth was only six thousand years old. Because most people believed these things to be true, they were commonly assumed to be true. And false assumption has always been a major obstacle to Truth.
However, as Chalmers and Buckland began to understand the extent and complexity of the earth's rock strata, with chalk beds over a mile thick and composed to the fossils of marine organisms, with massive unconformities where great depths of rock strata had beeen turned vertical, then eroded level and overlaid with thousands more feet of new strata, they were forced to study the Genesis account of creation much more carefully, with newly-opened minds.
These facts, coupled with the discovery of vast beds of "Satan's cratures", fossils of bizarre extinct organisms, led them to understand that although mankind may have existed for just some six thousand years, the Genesis account did not actually set the "antiquity of the globe", and that, as their observations suggested, it might be millions of years old. And so the gap theory was born, or at least resurrected.
The Double Dip
Sadly, it seems, young-earth creationists have come to equate Darwinism with "science" as a whsole, so that in their zeal to reject evolution they have been duped into rejecting science itself. So that just as many economists warn that government over-reaction to a financial crisis can rebound to induce a repeat or "double dip" recession, so the over-zealous reaction of young-earth creationism has enabled Darwin to inflict a second massive deception on the world.
In the soon-to-be-published "Evolution-- R.I.P." I challenge young-earth creationists, not only to find out where they have been misled by classic books such as "The Genesis Flood", but how the much-maligned but now modernised "gap theory" not only demolishes Darwin but does so in a scientifically accurate manner.
