Fifth Wheel Campers - Slider Hitch Information

A fifth wheel slider hitch makes all those dreams of on-the-road adventure come to life when you purchase a fifth wheel trailer. It's well worth the time to take your time to install it correctly.

Remember, if you are not confident in your engineering ability it is usually better to call in the professionals. Better safe than sorry. A few dollars could save your life.

Before starting:

• Make sure you have the correct hitch for both your vehicle and the trailer being towed.
• Review the instruction sheet provided with the hitch.
• Check the hitch attachment area of the vehicle. Do not attach a hitch to a vehicle which shows excessive corrosion or damage in the hitch attachment areas.
• Take the appropriate safety precautions. When elevating the vehicle on a hoist or ramps, ensure that the vehicle is properly secured and blocked such that it will not fall or roll off its supports.
• Be sure you have the appropriate tools and wear safety glasses when drilling holes.
Installation Tips

1. Prior to installation, it is good practice to loosely assemble the hitch, install the drawbar, pin and clip and hold the hitch up into position. This will allow identification of any obstructions to the installation, verification of drawbar position on the vehicle and also give an idea of how the hitch is to be installed.

2. A scissors jack or floor jack can be very useful in holding the hitch up in place. In many cases, clamps can be used to clamp the hitch to the frame during the installation procedure.

3. It may be necessary to temporarily loosen the exhaust system and/or slightly reposition it to clear the hitch during installation. This is particularly true where an exhaust system has been replaced prior to installing the hitch, as all hitches are designed using vehicle original equipment Do not forget to reattach any exhaust clamps, hangers etc. after hitch installation.

4. In some cases, it may be necessary to adjust the bumper on a vehicle, or the brackets which mount to the bumper, in order to properly install the hitch. Most bumpers are mounted to the bumper brackets using bolts in slots. Find the appropriate bolts and adjust the bumper accordingly.

5. Wherever possible, hitches are designed to use existing holes. In cases where appropriate holes are not available, holes must be drilled in the frame. Once the hitch is accurately positioned and clamped in place on the vehicle, holes can be drilled in the appropriate places using the holes in the hitch as a guide.

6. In cases where the holes must be drilled without using the hitch as a guide, hole locations can be permanently identified by spraying black paint through the hole locations. Remove the hitch, center punch the hole positions and drill a pilot hole. This can then be followed with the appropriate drill size for the hole required.

7. Drill holes that are either the same size as the bolt or at the most 1/32" larger. Clearance holes or slots are provided in the hitch for adjustment.

8. When drilling, be extremely careful to avoid drilling into vehicle components which are located behind where the hole is being drilled. Slacken off pressure on the drill just prior to breaking through.

9. When installing the hitch, be sure to use the reinforcing plates supplied with the hitch where appropriate. These plates reinforce the frame and spread the load to the frame edges.

10. The hitch must have solid metal to metal contact with the vehicle attachment points. Excessive undercoating or weld on the vehicle should be removed.

11. All hardware, with the exception of tab nuts ( thin nuts welded to a wire used on some hitch applications) and U-bolts are grade 5 (Imperial sizes) or 8.8 (metric sizes).

How Wedding Insurance Can Help You Get Hitched Without A Hitch

You'd be amazed at the sorts of claims wedding insurance companies have to deal with. Unfortunately, weddings are fraught with risks, dangers and unforeseen problems, although for insurance companies who offer wedding cover, many of these problems have been experienced, and this provides you with cover for virtually any scenario. It's worth bearing in mind that virtually every problem you can imagine occurring with your wedding has already happened many, many times - but if it happened to you, how would you manage? Even worse are those problems you haven't yet considered are even possible, and yet it's highly probable that somewhere, at some time, a wedding insurance company has seen a claim for just such an eventuality.

The problem is that weddings involve huge expenditure, a large group of unrelated people and companies taking a variety of orders and noting a wide range of requirements, all of which has to come together smoothly and seamlessly, without trouble and without complication at exactly the same time. It can seem an impossible task, but while it's true to say that if it can go wrong it almost certainly has to someone at some point, the vast majority of weddings go smoothly, with the happy couple getting hitched without a hitch, if you will.

If you've not given wedding insurance much consideration, or thought it just another, unnecessary expenditure adding to an increasingly bloated bill, offered by companies out to make money from love, then consider the following cases and ask yourself how you would manage. Consider, for example, the case of the family acquaintance who skidded on a bit of wedding cake that had found its way onto the dance floor, resulting in a fractured wrist, time off work and lost earnings. For that unfortunate couple, the happy day resulted in a legal case being brought against them. Remember, if it can go wrong, it probably already has.

Or perhaps it might be worth bearing in mind the regular claim wedding insurers receive relating to damaged clothing. Since in many cases the Groom's outfit and many other outfits or accessories are hired, this represents a significant risk. Grooms spilling drink or food down their delightfully crisp, white shirts, or dipping their suit tails in the trifle inadvertently are not unheard of, yet could cost the price of the suit at worse - a substantial sum if you're already on a budget.

It's not the happiest of ways to start a marriage - having to forgo your honeymoon to pay for the accidents at your wedding.

Then there's the chauffeur who lost his license for speeding or the DJ who was arrested for piracy. From accident to business failures, there are so many things which can ruin a happy day if you're not prepared. But you can't prepare for everything. You can prepare for many of the possible problems you've foreseen, but remember - it's the problems you haven't foreseen, and the ones you couldn't consider in your wildest dreams that are likely to upset your day.

In some cases your wedding day may well go more or less to plan, but in others you may have to postpone or even cancel your wedding entirely - and if you haven't got any wedding insurance, how will you manage then? Can you, for example, be completely certain that neither you nor your partner will be ill on your wedding day? How would you manage if you had to be rushed to hospital with appendicitis the day before your wedding? Once again - this has happened, and very similar instances occur frequently, as insurance companies know only too well.

But let's not dwell on the negative side of weddings. Rather than worry about things you almost certainly can't do anything to prevent anyway, let someone else do the worrying for you. And should things go wrong, let them sort things out for you.

Wedding insurance is a kind of peace of mind. Granted, you hope you'll never need it, but insurance companies that cover weddings have tremendous experience in looking at the negative side of life. They must be pretty miserable people, always looking at problems - but that's what they're paid for after all. For the sake of £30 or so you can relax, knowing that should the worst happen, you won't be out of pocket, and you'll be able to still have the wedding of your dreams, not your nightmares. Of course, having said all that, you'll undoubtedly still have nerves, and there's one thing that most insurers won't be able to guarantee - and that's the quality of the Best Man's speech.
