Fuel Gauge
How do I fix the fuel gauge on a 1997 Subaru Outback?

The gauge works, but it drops from full to empty faster than it should. When it reads empty, it still has five gallons left in the 15.9 gallon tank. However, if I keep driving, about 50 miles past the empty mark, the low fuel warning light comes on, so it appears that the low fuel warning light is accurate. I have replaced the sending unit in the tank with no effect. How do I isolate and fix this problem?

Your replacement sending unit was defective. Return it and get another one.

Actually, the sending unit consists of two components: the primary gas gauge and the electronic sending unit. There are actually two gas gauges in the gas tank. The primary gas gauge is connected to the electronic sending unit. If all that was replaced was the electronic sending unit, that normally isn't the problem. The problem is in the primary gas gauge. Both gauges are actually variable resistor rheostats (As the gas level goes down the resistance goes up because the gauge is contacting more turns of the coil). As they get older, the copper surface oxides from water in the gas tank increasing the resistance in the circuit (simulating more turns of the coil).

You can actually remove the primary gas gauge/electronic sending unit from behind the back seat under the trunk cover and clean off the copper contacts with copper cleaner. This will correct the problem and cost you $3 for the copper cleaner.

Caution: Do not have any flames within the area or you will blow yourself up when you remove the electronic sending unit/primary gas gauge.

Fuel Gauge

Cars and the Importance of Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure on Fuel Consumption and Safety

The tires are where your car touches the road. Your car’s tires are the part of the car that is going to take the most wear and tear from the road and they will be in constant contact with it. It is therefore very important to take appropriate care of your tires since this may have a huge consequence on your safety, the safety of your family and the safety of others.

Special consideration needs to be taken when there is snow or other adverse weather conditions.

It is never a bad investment to have a tire Pressure Gauge at hand. Sometimes the answer to how safe your car’s tires are is also the answer to how safe you are in your car.

Apart from your safety, the tire pressure also affects your car’s mileage. In fact, you can mark down every pound of pressure of your underinflated tires responsible for around 2% loss of efficiency on your car’s mileage. Therefore it makes a lot of sense to keep the appropriate level of pressure in your tires.

Weather has an important effect on your tires’s pressure. Further more the time of the day you check your car’s tires may also have an effect on your readings.

Check the pressure in the morning when it is still cold outside. The air in the tires heats up after a drive and therefore the pressure inside the tires increases. This means the gauge will never give you the actual tire pressure if you check it after you have been driving around.

Apart from keeping the appropriate level of pressure in your tires there are other ways  you can do to save hundreds of dollars annually on your car’s fuel bill.
